I want to share a bit of the story of this song with you:

Grandmother I Honour You – video

The other day I shared this video in a group on Facebook and
I had a comment from someone who said they first learned it
in Taiwan, from a woman there who had learned it at the
Spirit Weavers gathering in California, presumably from a
sister who learned it from me in Israel and shared it there.

This is probably the furthest flung place that I’ve heard of
it turning up in, but by no means the only one. News has
reached me of it cropping up in many different countries
around the world. The interesting thing is that I only just
posted this video version on the web and so up until now it’s
just been passed on aurally and that’s how it’s ended up
reaching all these different places.

One time it was sung by a woman who I’d never met before,
who I was sat next to in a gathering in Germany, and she was
very surprised to discover that the person who had written it
was sitting right next to her!

Sometimes, we birth a song into the world and it seems to
have a direction and a purpose all of it’s own. I’ve learnt so
many songs from my brothers and sisters that have touched me
very deeply and brought me so much inspiration and it’s so good
to be able to give back in that way.

It has been a revelation to me to hear that a song that came
to me while gardening in Somerset and shared round the fire
with family and friends in the UK has spread so far and wide
without having been recorded.

It may be something  to do with the simplicity of the song that
has enabled it to be shared so widely and I think that is a good
affirmation for me to keep it simple and to express the things
which are really meaningful in the context of family, a family
which has at it’s heart the inspiration and warmth of the sacred
fire.

It was a real joy to make this video with my dear friends Stevie P
Maya Love and Helen Brock and I really look forward to making
a studio recording of it sometime soon. In the meantime, please
feel free to share it on facebook or wherever. Who knows where
this song will reach on the next leg of it’s journey through cyber
space!

I’m offering an MP3 download of the song here, in case you’d
like to listen to it and if you to feel inspired to learn it and sing
it with your loved ones then that would be the best of all. It sounds
best round the fire with a rattle and drum!

Grandmother I Honour You – MP3

I love to hear about the different places this song has been shared
so please feel free to write me an email and let me know where it
has arrived to; send me a video or a sound recording of it being
sung, wherever that may be. It would really make my day!

I give thanks for the opportunity to share this prayer of
gratitude for love and life.

Many blessings

Sunny
